The Unfinished Season

As many are apt to do in this hi-tech digital age, I often marathon shows. In fact, it is so ingrained in my habits that it is now difficult for me to immerse myself in the "normal" mode of watching shows, the old serial method of watching week to week. Castle is my current favorite: I love crime dramas. I could do nothing but immerse myself all day in the witty banter and gruesome death of Law and Order:CI, CSI, Criminal Minds, Elementary and Sherlock. Nothing is more intriguing to me than a mystery. I'm also a huge fan of House MD, again in the same vein. I also love a good sitcom. HIMYM was my favorite... until the regrettable last season. Which brings me to the point of this musing. I have an odd habit, and I wonder how common it is. When I get near the end of a season of one of these shows... I stop. I move on to something else. In severe cases (HIMYM) I will not finish the show, but in general I wait until the next season come out and available, and then I rewatch the entire show... until almost the new ending point. Is it obsession? I find myself doing this with many things that are in a series or in sequence. Books, video games, experiences, thoughts... I halt at the end. Let it stew. Come back to it later. In our immediate gratification world, I just don't want things to be over so quickly. I want to savor the flavor.
